Historical Development of Electronic Commerce

The meaning of the term "electronic commerce" has changed over time. Originally, "electronic commerce" meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, usually using technology like Electronic Data Interchange (EDI, introduced in the late 1970s) to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically.
Later it came to include activities more precisely termed "Web commerce" -- the purchase of goods and services over the World Wide Web via secure servers (note HTTPS, a special server protocol which encrypts confidential ordering data for customer protection) with e-shopping carts and with electronic pay services, like credit card payment authorizations.
When the Web first became well-known among the general public in 1994, many journalists and pundits forecast that e-commerce would soon become a major economic sector. However, it took about four years for security protocols (like HTTPS) to become sufficiently developed and widely deployed (during the browser wars of this period). Subsequently, between 1998 and 2000, a substantial number of businesses in the United States and Western Europe developed rudimentary Web sites.
Although a large number of "pure e-commerce" companies disappeared during the dot-com collapse in 2000 and 2001, many "brick-and-mortar" retailers recognized that such companies had identified valuable niche markets and began to add e-commerce capabilities to their Web sites. For example, after the collapse of online grocer Webvan, two traditional supermarket chains, Albertsons and Safeway, both started e-commerce subsidiaries through which consumers could order groceries online.
As of 2005, e-commerce has become well-established in major cities across much of North America, Western Europe, and certain East Asian countries like South Korea. However, e-commerce is still emerging slowly in some industrialized countries, and is practically nonexistent in many Third World countries.
Electronic commerce has unlimited potential for both developed and developing nations, offering lucrative profits in a highly unregulated environment.

Starting Your E-Commerce Site

So you’ve decided to start an e-commerce web site. Congratulations! There has never been a better time than now to start an e-commerce web site. To the average business person, starting an e-commerce site is a daunting task. The purpose of this article is to point you in the right direction and inform you of some of your options.
The first step in creating your e-commerce site is to decide how to create your site. Since e-commerce has exploded over the last few years, there are more design options. The “easier” option is to use an all in one package from one of the larger hosting companies. Another option is to use an e-commerce system like osCommerce or X-Cart. Finally, another option is you can have a web developer design a custom site for you. Now let’s take a look at these options.
All in One PackagesAre you new to the internet? This could possibly be the best option for you. Hosting companies such as GoDaddy, Yahoo, 1and1, and Homestead have created plans where you can setup e-commerce sites yourself using a sitebuilder. Instead of paying a large price for your site, you pay a monthly cost to cover hosting. For about $10 a month, you can have an e-commerce site.
E-Commerce SystemsDo you have a little experience with designing web sites? Then you can use an e-commerce system for your site. Systems such as osCommerce and X-Cart are full-functioning e-commerce solutions that make doing business easy. All you have to do is buy the hosting, install the software, and personalize the system. Although that is easier said than done, it is still a low cost solution.
Custom DesignIf you’re looking for a specific type of e-commerce system or want a truly unique site, you can hire a web development company to design your site. While this is the more expensive option, you get what you pay for. If you choose the right company, you’ll get a designed to order e-commerce system and some search engine optimization. They can also provide information about online marketing and how to make your site successful.
Starting an e-commerce site is by no means an easy task, but it is a great idea. If done correctly, you can take your business to customers in different states, countries, or even continents! The door is in front of you, all you have to do is knock. Good luck with your online venture!

Best Ecommerce - 5 Easy Steps to Make More Money With Ecommerce

E-Commerce used to be entirely based upon three principles: developing a site, publishing it and then your site with search engines. All you had to do was simply sit and wait for customers to visit your site and buy your merchandise.
E-commerce has graduated to a more philanthropically diverse role in the entire spectrum of internet marketing. E-commerce is now intertwined with internet marketing as a whole and is now simply a subset. There are many forms of e-commerce available to any person selling goods or services: internet, television or even social networking means like YouTube, MySpace and others alike.
In order to take your spot on the e-commerce “wheel of fortune”, the following five easy steps can only help you to make more money with e-commerce than if you don’t follow them. These are by no means the only steps you can take to help in your quest, but, merely the most followed:
One. Develop traffic to your site using optimization tools, keywords, article submission
Two. Getting return traffic to your site through backlinking methods and things such as banner ads
Three. Making your site different and more appealing than your competitors
Four. Setting up affiliate marketing
Five. Promote your business effectively using ethical practices
There are many ways to make more money with e-commerce, but, one of the ways to make it profitable is to market your business using savvy techniques such as making your product sound unique as you need to make your site and product stand above the crowd.

E-commerce Gets A Boost

A vast number (and an increasing proportion) of people have successfully started up an online e-commerce business. The software, training and backup are all easily, and relatively cheaply, available. But how expensive is the software and where can you go for the best platform or advice?
E-commerce is becoming one of the most successful internet business categories online today. As with everything, products and services need to constantly evolve and upgrade to meet demands and competition.
Microsoft’s programming language, the .NET Framework, has quickly become a hit with the E-commerce industry. The language lets programmers quickly write programs to connect, securitize, modify, and create E-commerce features or services. The ease of use, power, and security Microsoft can offer through this language has led it to become one of the leading E-commerce languages to program in.
Surprisingly, the language can be downloaded absolutely free - not bad at all. There are some 3rd party modifications that cost money, but aren’t required in making the next best E-commerce application. The integration of web service programming is what has made the language a hit- letting programmers program web services amazingly fast.
The .NET framework also has the capability of communicated with other languages, such as Visual C++ and Visual Basic. Overall, the language is rivaled by no other- both from its list of features and from its distribution as a free software from the good people at Microsoft. Prospective programmers will most likely be expected to learn the framework in the future, as it is rapidly growing and evolving.
The e-commerce business is set to continue its expansion in the coming years and the .NET framework will no doubt be of great benefit in this growth.

Implications Of E-Commerce For Tax Legislation

As e-commerce develops ambiguities in the current tax code in which it may be exposed. It would not be regarded as too early to take premature steps for undertaking such a review at a time when detailed international legislation are going on to promulgate acceptable standards laws for imposition taxation in this regard. The Central Board of Revenue should take active part in promulgation of conducting research on this subject in hand and should propose any changes to tax law in the light of what emerges in development in e-business. In the meantime, Central board of Revenue will do two things:
o Make sure that e-commerce taxation requirements are fully considered when recommending amendments are made to existing laws, and
o Such changes should be made to national tax laws that are needed as unforeseen legal obstacles to the growth of e-commerce emerge to subject to tax revenue constraints.
If there is a difficulty in fitting any of our existing tax legislation to e-commerce transactions, then CBR should look at these emerging legal problems connect with its execution and administration. Uncertainty is bad for business. Taxpayers should not be left in doubt as to the applicability of a particular provision of tax laws. This is not to say that all of the existing tax legislation should be made applicable to e-commerce. However, the fact remains that e-commerce is just another way of doing business and it should normally be subject to the same tax requirements as any other method of doing business. The development of e-commerce may require some fine tuning of our tax laws in consistent in international legislative trends.

Customer Service for Chambers of Commerce

Customer service is important in any business, we all know that and there can be no relevant debate. However what about the groups that the businesses all belong too? What about the Industry Associations or those small business chambers of commerce in each town; do they give good customer service? Should they? Do they have that as part of their mission statement? Sure their vision statement includes supporting their members, but do they give them good customer service.
Recently I was in North Carolina and I talked to a regional Chamber of Commerce and we discussed how their Chamber of Commerce was better than other regional Chamber of Commerce is across the country. She was the director of membership and she told me that sometimes there was not the participation that they had hoped for from some of their top businesses in town. Often some of the businesses would fail to renew their membership unless the Chamber of Commerce went and told them that it had expired.
She said; do not ask what your Chamber of Commerce can do for you ask what you can do for your Chamber of Commerce. Then he stated that you only get out, which he put in and to those businesses which did not participate would not reap the rewards of their valuable Chamber of Commerce membership. It's not that I disagree with this attitude, because I believe that is true with anything, however I think he missed the point on what customer service is all about and why you need to ask your customers what you can do for them. Please consider all this in 2006.

What Is Ecommerce?

Electronic commerce, or e-commerce, refers to the use of the Internet at any point during the buying and selling of goods. The term is commonly used to refer to transactions where an actual payment has been made online via a credit card. But e-commerce also involves other online activities such as marketing, distribution and servicing of products over the Internet. Electronic commerce often relies on technologies such as e-mail and enterprise resource planning applications for transaction completion and order fulfillment.
The term e-business is usually interchangeable with e-commerce. However, some definitions treat Electronic commerce as a subset of e-business. In these cases, a clear distinction is made between transactions that involve the exchange of money online and those that don't. A transaction where a payment is made online is defined as e-commerce. And e-business is used to refer to all non-fiscal online transactions that facilitate and support the actual sale.
Electronic commerce can involve commercial activity between different interest groups. These could be business to business (B2B), business to consumer (B2C), business to administration (B2A), business to employee (B2E) or customer to customer (C2C). These classifications can be broken down into further sub-groups. For example, a B2B activity could be a vertical e-marketplace that offers goods or services to businesses within a specific industry segment. Alternatively, it could be a horizontal e-marketplace that offers services to businesses irrespective of industry segment.
E-commerce continues to grow in popularity and a large amount of business is transacted online every year. But it's worth noting that it also presents many challenges for governments and regulatory bodies, which can also affect your business. The United Kingdom has relatively clear Electronic commerce definitions and laws. But with its decentralised and complicated tax structure, the United States still has a moratorium on new, multiple or discriminatory Internet taxes. In 2000, an advisory commission on e-commerce in the United States failed to reach a conclusive agreement on Electronic commerce taxation.

Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce)

Electronic commerce (or E-commerce) means the buying or selling of products or services over the Internet. The amount of successful E-commerce transactions have grown exponentially since the widespread use of the Internet.
Electronic commerce has changed dramatically over the last 30 years. Originally, the term "electronic commerce" was coined to mean the "facilitation of commercial transactions electronically". Technology like "Electronic Funds Transfer" (EFT) was introduced in the late 1970s to enable businesses to send commercial documents like purchase orders electronically. Credit cards and ATMs (introduced and accepted in the 1980s) were also forms of e-commerce.
Many economic experts forecasted that E-commerce would become a major economic sector when the Internet became widespread in the early 1990s. During the "Dot com" era, E-commerce came to encompass the purchase of goods and services via the Internet, usually with secure connections and electronic payment services such as credit card payment authorizations.
Almost all purely E-commerce companies collapsed during the "dot-com" bubble-burst in 2000 and 2001. But many "brick-and-mortar" retailers began to add e-commerce capabilities to their Web sites. For example, a traditional supermarket chain, Safeway, started e-commerce subsidiaries through which consumers could order groceries online.
The emergence of E-commerce also significantly increased the opportunities in the selling of many types of goods; many small home-based businesses are able to use the Internet to sell their goods or services. Wish to buy something? Visit eBay.com (an online auction site that provides a platform for selling or buying merchandise). Wish to announce a garage sale? Visit Ablewise.com (a popular online classifieds site that provides services for both free and paid advertising) and place an advertisement with them. With the E-commerce scene as it is today, there is almost nothing that you are not able to find and buy/sell over the Internet.

Which means, with this kind of an attitude, it is a must therefore that, people who are engaged in E-commerce business should consider creating a website that provided eye catching headline banner to initially capture reader’s attention.
• Learn to know what the consuming public demands. If you noticed, popular search engines like Yahoo and Google release from time to time their most searchable keywords. By this, they are letting the public know what the majority wants to read and know. Therefore, it is also your obligation as one engaged in e-commerce business to determine what the consuming public wants so you know what to offer them.
• Create an impressive e-commerce site. By what I mean of impressive is that the content of the site should be high in standard. It must contain something that is not ordinarily found on common websites. Give your readers something different to look forward to on your site.

E-Commerce - The New Frontier, Yes It's STILL New

E-commerce is a relatively new invention as far as commerce is concerned and therefore has not completely stabilized. There is a vast amount that people do not know about e-commerce; it's possibilities and it's risks. There are also a large number of people that do not know about e-commerce at all.
The internet has grown by 215% in the last 7 years and even this growth through out the world encompasses only 17% of the total population.[Int] Considering the figures from [Int] the opportunity for e-commerce is astounding and at the same time the risks and destabilization factors are just as great.
Simply because we can cite a couple of companies that have survived the .com bust and prospered such as Yahoo, Google, and Amazon.com, we cannot say that e-commerce has stabilized. There is no way of knowing whether it has stabilized or not.
[Lev99] illustrates that it was the human interaction that drove the rise of civilization and eventually the internet and it is this very same force that will keep e-commerce from stabilizing completely. Some businesses will never be able to transfer all operation to e-commerce simply because of the human interaction factor that humans desire. You can send an email, but it will never be as effective as a phone conversation; while a video conference will never replace throwing back a few cold ones during a business deal. As long as every business is not able to completely operate on the internet without the bricks, e-commerce cannot be considered to be a stable operating medium for a business.
Nevertheless, e-commerce is essential for the success of modern businesses because of the pervasiveness of technology and the current drive toward automation. The internet enables e-commerce to span the globe and to give companies reach into corners of the world where access was impossible previously. To leave out e-commerce form a business model could be a devastating mistake.
E-commerce security also has a long way to go before it stabilizes. Firewalls and even biometrics can be defeated with clever exploits and social engineering opening the way for significant destabilization within e-commerce. There is nothing in ecommerce resembling the vault at Ft. Knox. Even NSA computers have been hacked and White House websites defaced. Until security on the internet is stabilized e-commerce can hardly be said to have stabilized.

What Are The Barriers of Implementing E-Commerce Solutions

What is electronic commerce?
“Electronic commerce is about doing business electronically. It is based on the electronic processing and transmission of data, including text, sound and video. It encompasses many diverse activities including electronic trading of goods and services, online delivery of digital content, electronic fund transfers, electronic share trading, electronic bills of lading, commercial auctions, collaborative design and engineering, on-line sourcing, public procurement, direct consumer marketing, and after-sales service. It involves both products (e.g. consumer goods, specialized medical equipment) and services (e.g. information services, financial and legal services); traditional activities (e.g. healthcare, education) and new activities (e.g. virtual malls).” (European Commission, 1997).
Web commerce transactions are often unprofitable because companies fail to change their back-end fulfillment process. Below are some fallacies, in order of importance:
· Our logistics operation can handle web commerce fulfillment
· We can now sell effectively around the globe
· Our existing supplier relationship will support e-commerce applications
· We are selling over the web so we must be making money over the web
· We can always integrate e-commerce solutions with our existing activities
Critical success factors:
-Target the right customers
-Own the customer’s total experience
-Streamline business processes that impact the customer
-Provide a 360-degree view of customer relationship
-Let customers help themselves
-Help customers do their job
-Deliver personalized service
-Foster community
Conclusions
Identifying the barriers in implementing e-commerce:
1. Resistance to new technology
2. Difficulty of implementation
3. Security is an over hyped problem
4. Lack of skills
5. Lack of potential customer connected
6. Cost
Electronic commerce is shaping the way in which business of the future will be transacted. Although e-commerce is relatively recent phenomenon, those companies that are seizing the opportunities it offers will reinforce their market position.

Best E-Commerce - Strong Points to Ponder About E-Commerce

Electronic commerce or business commerce to many is the common household term nowadays as everything in the household can be potentially driven and be transacted via electronic commerce. E-commerce emerged as the newest technology in doing business because of the unique capability of e-commerce to engage into transactions by which data are electronically transmitted. If you are considering in your heart engaging into e-commerce in the near future, the following points about e-commerce may help you:
a. Always make sure that you have a click driven box on your site. High percentage of the visits on a site is driven by either a mistaken click or inadvertently has clicked on the button. But, regardless whether it came from a mistaken click or not, the point is there is a visit that was generated. Besides, more and more people are engaged at clicking one thong when they are told to click so.
b. In any e-commerce dealings make sure that you only include short and easy to remember steps, or codes, or procedures. People on the net have slow tolerance in recollecting things. Do not make it difficult for these people and to your business.
c. Always create a highly compelling and attractive site contents more specifically with the headlines. It is believed that people on the net spend more time browsing on all the site headings rather than opening one by one all the websites that they see on the net. If your site has a highly compelling headline to begin with, the more chances of your site to be opened and read.
Putting all these things in summed up form, very fundamentally, when doing e-commerce, you will need to make sure that you give your potential clients precise, direct to the point, and accurate information if you want to have more and more clients.
